The European Commission is an institution of the European Union. It works together with the Member States to protect and promote the health of European people. Health is a key priority for the European Commission.
The Commission's Directorate General for Health and Consumer Protection includes a Directorate for Public Health and Risk Assessment, which has the following objectives:
a) To assure a high level of human health protection in the development of all Community policies;
b) To take actions to improve public health in the European Union, to prevent human illness and diseases and to obviate sources of danger to human health;
c) To provide independent and transparent risk assessments through SANCO scientific committees;
d) To implement the Public Health programme (2003-2008).
