Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 in the European Region

During the period 21–27 December 2009, high influenza activity was reported in Georgia, Poland, Serbia and Ukraine, and regions of the Russian Federation. While influenza activity continues, clinical respiratory disease activity has declined over the past 3 weeks in 16 countries.

arrowVaccine for Azerbaijan 
 29 January 2010
Thirty-seven countries in the WHO European Region have organized pandemic (H1N1) 2009 vaccine campaigns. Azerbaijan received its first shipment of donated vaccine in early January 2010, and is currently vaccinating target groups including health workers, life support services staff, pregnant women and people with chronic lung disease. WHO has received pledged donations of 199 million doses of pandemic (H1N1) 2009 vaccine from countries and manufacturers. Azerbaijan is one of 8 countries eligible in the European Region to receive the donated vaccine.
 
   
arrowDonated pandemic (H1N1) 2009 vaccine arrives in Azerbaijan

Today, Azerbaijan received its first shipment of donated pandemic (H1N1) 2009 vaccine. Vaccination will target health care workers, the staff of life support services, pregnant women, people with a history of chronic lung disease and children aged 14–17. The pre-qualified, inactivated adjuvanted vaccine is produced by GlaxoSmithKline.

While pandemic (H1N1) 2009 activity remains high in four countries, Georgia, Poland, Serbia and Ukraine, and some regions of the Russian Federation, clinical respiratory disease activity has declined over the past 3 weeks in 16 countries. A shipment of donated pandemic (H1N1) 2009 vaccine is due to arrive in Azerbaijan this week.

While pandemic (H1N1) 2009 activity remains high in 15 countries, clinical respiratory disease activity has declined in 10 countries over the past 3 weeks: Belgium, Bulgaria, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Sweden and Ukraine. Vaccination campaigns have started in 27 countries.

22 countries in the European Region reported high influenza activity for the period 20–26 November 2009, particularly in children up to 15 years of age. While activity has increased in 16 countries, it has decreased in 10.

Influenza activity remains high and widespread across much of the European Region, especially in children aged 15 years and younger, according to reports from countries for the period 13 to 20 November 2009. The Norwegian Institute of Public Health has informed WHO of a mutation detected in three H1N1 viruses, and its significance is being assessed.

The Norwegian Institute of Public Health has informed WHO of a mutation detected in three H1N1 viruses. The viruses were isolated from the first two fatal cases of pandemic influenza in the country and one patient with severe illness.

Preliminary tests on samples taken from patients in Ukraine reveal no significant changes in the pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus. Preliminary genetic sequencing shows that the virus is similar to the virus used for production of the pandemic influenza vaccine, reconfirming the vaccine's efficacy at this time.

 14 November 2009
Belarus, Bulgaria, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Kazakhstan, Norway, Poland, the Republic of Moldova, the Russian Federation, Sweden, Turkey, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom (Northern Ireland only) reported high or very high pandemic activity during the period 5 to 12 November 2009. WHO has released revised guidance on the clinical management of human infection with pandemic (H1N1) 2009.
 
   
arrowHealth facilities in Ukraine well prepared for pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza 
 12 November 2009
Doctors from 486 hospitals all over Ukraine shared lessons learned from and their clinical experience with fighting the pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus during a teleconference with the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and WHO yesterday. Based on its field investigations, the WHO team concluded that Ukraine’s health facilities were well prepared and medical staff highly motivated to deal with the influx of cases.

Belarus, Bulgaria, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, the Russian Federation, Sweden and the United Kingdom (Northern Ireland only) reported high or very high pandemic activity during the period 27 October to 4 November 2009. Ukraine reported high rates of acute respiratory infection, compared to the same period in five previous years, and a WHO team of experts is investigating the outbreak.

An international team of experts is continuing to investigate the outbreak of influenza-like illness in Ukraine, including interviewing frontline health workers. This will reveal any similarities to other outbreaks of pandemic (H1N1) 2009.
