Uzbekistan HiT now available in Russian

The Uzbek health system has undergone significant changes since the country became independent in 1991. The establishment of a state-guaranteed benefits package was an important element of health reforms. However, a number of essential services were left outside the state-guaranteed benefits package for the majority of the population, including secondary and tertiary services and outpatient pharmaceuticals. This has created many challenges.

New Eurohealth on health inequalities

This issue of Eurohealth is largely devoted to health inequalities. Articles include: a Commission perspective on reducing health inequalities in the EU; challenges with measuring health inequalities and data availability; and examples of national strategic approaches in France, Hungary and the Netherlands. Other health policy developments explored in this issue include morbidity-based risk adjustment in Germany and improving health system performance in New Zealand.

New project on Health Service Research priority setting

The European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies is participating in HSR Europe, a Support Action project in the 7th Framework Program of DG Research. This project is aimed to identify, evaluate and improve the contribution of HSR to the health policy process both at the national and the EU level. One of the major activities will be the organization of a working conference, on 8-9 April 2010, where the HSR community and decision-makers will meet to set an agenda for European HSR and to help strengthen the research-policy infrastructure Europe wide.

The Observatory's partner, LSE Health and Social Care has been awarded the prestigious Queen's Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education 2009 in the UK. LSE Health and Social Care received the prize for its continuing ability to bridge the gap between research and policy to the advancement of global health and social care policy. Its work is ‘widely and frequently referenced by policy makers and has contributed to raising the quality of evidence-based policy making within government’.
