Improving hospital safety and disaster response in Tajikistan

WHO

WHO/Europe and the Ministry of Health, Tajikistan are working together to improve hospital safety and disaster response capacity in Tajikistan.

Representatives from WHO and the Ministry of Health in Tajikistan met on 11 February 2011 to discuss vulnerability reduction plans for district level hospitals based on a series of “Hospital Safety Index” assessments conducted in Tajikistan in 2010. This is part of a hospital safety project funded by the Japanese Government. Non-structural and organizational improvements carried out during the project will strengthen the resilience and safety of the hospitals and increase their response capacity during crises.

An overview of the Incident Command System (ICS) was provided, followed by discussion of its usefulness and potential implementation by the Ministry of Health as a disaster management system.

Utilization of new operational systems, such as ICS, along with public health emergency management training at the facility level are part of the efforts by WHO and the Ministry of Health to improve disaster response capacity in Tajikistan.
