Earthquake devastation in Haiti

A major earthquake struck the impoverished country of Haiti on Tuesday leaving thousands dead and injured and tens of thousands homeless. Haiti’s health system was hit hard with at least eight health facilities damaged and destroyed in a time when health services are needed most.

Many governments, non-governmental and international organizations throughout the world have been responding by sending emergency rescue teams and humanitarian aid to Haiti. Several countries in the European Region are among the first in responding to the tragedy and providing generous and urgent relief aid. WHO/PAHO is supporting the Haitian government to coordinate international assistance in health.
