WHO estimates that a third of the world's population is infected by tuberculosis (TB) and there are about 9 million new TB cases annually. Even in the European Region, there are an estimated 49 new TB cases and 7 deaths every hour.

However, TB can be prevented and cured if taken seriously as a threat to individuals and public health. This requires efficient and timely prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

WHO/Europe works with many partners:

  • to improve the monitoring and surveillance of TB in the WHO European Region;
  • to support the implementation of the Stop TB Strategy in the Member States of the WHO European Region;
  • to provide policy guidance and technical assistance to the Member States on effective TB control;
  • to develop guidelines and protocols on TB diagnosing, treatment, prevention and care for programme managers, policy-makers, nongovernmental organizations, technical and financial partners and health personnel.
