First United Nations Global Road Safety Week, 23-29 April 2007
The First United Nations Global Road Safety Week was called for in the 2005 United Nations General Assembly resolution A/60/5 on 'Improving global road safety'. The Week was jointly organized by United Nations Regional Commissions and WHO.
Theme for 2007: young road usersYoung people constitute a major group at risk of death, injury and disability on the road, thus the focus on young road users. It is hoped however that the actions resulting from the Week will benefit road users of all ages.
The Week aimed to raise awareness about the societal impact of road traffic injuries, highlighting the risks for young road users, and to promote action around key factors which have a major impact on preventing road traffic injuries: helmets, seat-belts, drink driving, speeding and infrastructure.
Young delegates from all over the world gathered in Geneva for the first World Youth Assembly on Road Safety on 23-24 April 2007, to explore how road safety for young people can be improved and to adopt a Youth Declaration. A Stakeholders Forum and a Road Safety Exhibition were also held during the Week.
